May 23, 2011It has been my experience that when runnin big tires and lockers on tight, twisty trails that a power steering fliud cooler is a must. Here is the install with a few pics of how I did it on my 97 explorer sport.
This is the cooler I used, i`ve used`em on several of my trucks
Ya always wanna mount it in a spot where it will get lots of air flow
Route the hoses away from sharp corners
Next, hook up your hoses on the LOW pressure side. Usually the low pressure side of the system is just a hose that runs from the steering gear box to the power steering pump reservoir. Make sure that you secure the hoses away from sharp edges and componants that get hot (exhaust manifolds, egr tubes and the like).
Top off the power steering fluid and turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times to purge out the air. Check all of the connections for leaks, recheck the fluid level and top off if needed. Hit the trails and enjoy!
