July 17, 2005I got a bit of a problem here. The ol ladys car ... a '95 Pontiac Bonneville, had a problem w/the ignition switch. I got in there and fixed the problem but am having a serious problem w/the spring that sits behind the horn contacts. When you get the steering wheel, air bag, air bag controls off, theres a metal ring, then a plastic ring, then a spring that has to be mashed down to get the retainer in place. I have done 2 trucks similar to this one but not e4xactly like it.
I am having hell getting the junk mashed in there to get the retainer back on. What I've done in the past is mash it in w/my thunbs(hurts like hell) and have someone else work the retainer in place. This ain't happenin here ... cant overcome the spring ... almost got it to the groove but not quite.
I mashed the spring down and measured. I then made a collar to fit in there. It works ok but the steering wheel is a little loose. I would like to do it right. Does anyone know of a special tool to maybe mash that ring down while pulling up on the center nub of the steering column? I am gonna have to make one if I cant find one. Just dont want to have to since I am out of Acetylene.
