Yes it is clay mud. It gets thick, nasty, and slick as snot. Sticks like glue and takes forever to clean. The state is using it for local road construction. They scrapped all the top soil off to get to the clay underneath. We know the owner of the land and he don't care if we play in it. It's only like 4 acres, but fun as heck.
Here is a couple of more pics taken earlier in the year at the same pit. The mud likes to stick to the tires.
In the above pic you can see the black barrior the state put up to stop erosion. It does a great job of keeping the water in too.
